Brian Druker, M.D.

Dr. Druker is the Director of the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Dr. Druker has an extensive background in cancer-based translational medicine, with a focus on translating the knowledge of the molecular pathogenesis of cancer into specific therapies and investigating the optimal use of these molecularly targeted agents.

Prior to his appointment as Director of the Knight Cancer Institute, Dr. Druker was the Director of the Center for Hematologic Malignancies at OHSU where he lead the development of STI571, commonly known as Gleevec®. After completing a series of preclinical studies, Dr. Druker spearheaded the clinical trials of STI571 for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Gleevec® is currently US FDA approved for CML and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). His role in the development of STI571 and its application in the clinic have resulted in numerous awards for Dr. Druker, including election to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in 2003, the American Association of Physicians in 2006, and the National Academy of Sciences in 2007.

Michael Heinrich, M.D.

Dr. Heinrich is a Professor of Medicine at OHSU and Interim Division Head, Center for Health and Healing. He earned his medical degree in 1984 from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore and completed both his residency training and Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowship at OHSU. His primary research interest is in the development of the novel tyrosine kinase inhibitors for treatment of human cancers. Dr. Heinrich's research includes both pre-clinical identification of novel molecular targets and testing of new agents in the laboratory and the clinic.

Dr. Heinrich’s research efforts are in collaboration with Dr. Christopher Corless, Director of Cancer Pathology Shared Resource at OHSU, with a focus on studying and classifying various types of oncogenic mutations that dictate patient response to targeted therapies associated with GIST and melanoma, among others.
